Stubby beer bottles are endlessly amusing. Look at that plump little bastard! 12 Horse ale is Genesee’s blonde ale, and it’s pleasant enough in that bland, Genesee way. I consider Genesee the Yuengling of New York, and it’s not often I’ll find anything besides Genny Light down here in Philadelphia. Which is a shame. I almost kind of like their cream ale, and even Genesee Ice is a bit of fun on a weekday morning. Aside from 12 Horse and Red Stripe, I’m not familiar with any beers that come in the “Little Hug” bottle style. I’d like to see more breweries go with the stubber. They’re easy to throw!

Dark, viscous yellow. It looks a bit like carbonated vegetable oil.

According to the Genesee website, 12 Horse is a “British style ale.” It’s pretty damn far from that, but it’s not awful. Bland and terribly sweet, which is not unusual for a Genesee brew.

It’s watery, which is a bit surprising. It looks like it ought to have some body, but no.

Such a cute bottle!

It was really damn cheap. I don’t think it was priced properly, but I did buy two six-packs that came out to $13.99 before tax.

Final Verdict

I really don’t hate it. Not tremendous, but it’s worth a try if you can find it. 3 out of a possible 5.
